What a year, 2018

I started writing this year end note with plans to lay into the lows and highs of my 2018 recorded music journey, but as I began to write down the highs, like reading a Psalm, I was moved to just say thank you for the many, many blessings God brought forward. I will talk about the hard places, the lessons learned at some other time because I think it is important to tell the whole story. It makes the victorious nature of serving a very able and faithful God all the sweeter; and we overcome by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony.

Thanks to God for all that you read below, and thanks to Him for a supportive wife who reminds you of those God markers when you start to grumble, a mom and family who keeps telling you to “say a prayer, trusts in God, keep the faith,” friends and ministry partners affirming you along the journey, and all of you who have been so very supportive of me and the music journey God is allowing.

Check out the highlights of 2018…

  1. A friend in the wings watching you through the years, believing in the value, gifts, talent, calling, integrity of the ministry you’ve been serving, risks his reputation, cashing in his chips to bring you to the attention of a label; that label taking a look and listen to a ministry 20 years in the making, believing that their investment in God’s ministry through you is worth the effort… just when you think it’s time to turn your life to other pursuits, God shows you that He remembers…
  2. Watching God employ friends, family, folks you hardly know, GoFundme, and one of those cattle from the thousand hills to provide the monies needed to seed the desire of your heart… Thank You Jehovah Jireh.
  3. Back and forth to Nashville, choosing music, learning what I can about being affiliated with a label, being introduced to crushingly talented session musicians, experiencing that first label release coming to life…what an adventure…
  4. Excited to have chosen “Because He Lives (Father of My Heart)” as the first release, shooting a video incorporating footage of the civil rights movement and the ones on the front lines, peoples of many nations within the struggles of life, the church in prayer, the church in action pressing into difficult places because we know He is, and He assures us of the ability to be more than conquerors. I thought it fitting for the times…
  5. The “Revolution” EP, and the single “Because He Lives (Father of my Heart)” were released in March 2018, and for the next 6 months appeared on a variety of indie charts, reaching number 3 on Indie Aircheck Christian, number 10 on Spin 30 Christian, and number 6 on Americana Boulevard Internet Radio. Niiiiice …
  6. The label informs me that “Because He Lives (Father of My Heart” has been listed on the first ballot of the 2018 GMA Dove Awards for Pop/Contemporary Recorded Single of the Year. Though I did not make the list of final nominees, to be in the company of David Crowder, Tauren Wells, Lauren Daigle, TobyMac, and Zach Williams, wow, not bad for a debut … actually pretty special and affirming…
  7. Whether I ever make it to radio, the beat of my heart is to be out doing the ministry, offering the music, being a vessel for God to use to bring light and truth to those who follow the Christ and those who do not. The passion of my heart is to do the work. It has been a slow road, and a test of faith, growing in perseverance, and not being discouraged, BUT…I believe that God has assembled an incredible team of musician/believers that will allow 2019 to be the start of doing the work in a fantastic way.

I cannot wait to get onto the field…
